While I was waiting for my go on Konami’s Saw II at Gamescom last week, I noticed a trailer playing on one of screens on the wall next to me. To say I was a little intrigued is an understatement.
So I did some research – NeverDead, a game from Shinta Nojiri (Metal Gear Solid Acid’s producer) and Rebellion (Aliens vs. Predator).
First shown at E3, the trailer starts of with a head (yes, a person’s head) on the floor. The head begins rolling and the camera pans out, revealing other body parts scattered around a large hall. As the head rolls over the body parts, they attach themselves (not necessarily in the right places) until you are whole again. The trailer ends with a large enemy ruining all your hard work and smashing you to the floor, scattering your body parts, once again.
It seems that the game will be very Devil-May-Cry-esque but with one main difference – your character cannot die. The emphasis will be on gameplay and the unique abilities and situations which immortality will grant you. For example, if you are outnumbered by enemies, shooting something above you to make it fall and land on you will kill the enemies around you while you get to walk (or perhaps, roll) away.
During an interview with 1up, Nojiri explained a little more about the game.
“There are so many immortals found in movies and games these days,” says Nojiri, talking about the recent fixation with zombies in popular culture, for instance. “Dismemberment is so unique in our game that we felt we needed to take full advantage of it.”
NeverDead will also feature a female partner who isn’t immortal like you but will fight alongside you and present “humour and conflict” to the game.
NeverDead will be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 but, as of yet, a date has not been mentioned.
