Nintendo hold 80% of the female ‘primary players’ home console market according to Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America president – and that’s not even taking account of the DS or PC markets.
Citing primary players as those who are main consoles users in a household, NoA claim that of 45 million gamers in the US, 11.7m – about 9% – are female. And of that 9% of girl gamers, 11% have/use the XBox360 and only 9% a PS3 – leaving a whopping 80% of female users citing Wii as their main console.
This translates into 9.36m female Wii players, with just 1.29m and 1.05m on the Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively.
Talking at a BMO Capital Markets event earlier this month, Fils-Aime said: “This didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of a deliberate attempt to expand the market.”

We only make 9% in the US?! Color me surprised…I figured the numbers between male and female would be closer by now. I’m definitely not a part of the 80% who own a wii either…I love my xbox 360 and PS2 way more :)
I was surprised too; not just as the figure, but at how low the 360/PS3 percentages were. Like you, I’d give up my Wii any time in order to keep my PS3!
I’m not quite sure how accurate this is, while 80% of females own a Wii, if said female gamers were to play the 360 or PS3 they might find that they prefer it.
My girlfriend is the perfect example of this, she owns a Wii, but she would much rather play my 360.
Nintendo makes the Wii out to be more female/family friendly, and it is this that causes more females to buy them, because they might feel put off about how ’serious’/'masculinely sexist’ the 360 and PS3 appear.
I think an interesting statistic to obtain would be, how many of that 80% has actually tried out the 360 or PS3?
I think it’s about 80% of girl GAMERS owning a Wii, not 80% of females overall.
But like Whitney and I evidence, not all females are nintendo fangirls. :)
Wow, I thought there would be way more of us girl gamers. Oh well, just more to be the proud, the bold, the few? (Stealing the Marine Corps. motto there) Anyways, is that why Nintendo keeps sending over those crap, half-hearted games to the US? Games like Wii Cheer and Cooking Mama. Ugh, I can’t stand game such as that. I think that it’s mildly insulting the lack of serious games put onto the Wii, and I do think that’s partly the developers reflecting on the Wii console consumers. At any rate, I am not a Wii owner, and I doubt I will be any time soon. My PS2 and Xbox 360 serve me far too well to get another console, especially one with such low grade games. Too bad they didn’t send Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse over here. :|
